Gears of War: E-Day’s Second Beta Weekend Is Open to Everyone — Here’s What You Actually Get

I missed most of the first weekend because I was watching someone else play it on a stream, which is a genuinely stupid way to spend early access you already have.
Second weekend starts Thursday. August 13 at 12pm PT, running until August 17 at 10am PT. The important part: it’s open. Every eligible platform, no pre-order, no Game Pass tier check, no code. If you were locked out of the first one, that’s over.
The content is identical, and I think that’s fine
The Coalition isn’t adding anything for weekend two. Same build, same map, and the same two modes.
A lot of people online read that as lazy. I don’t. Weekend one was gated to pre-orders and Game Pass Ultimate, which means the sample size on their servers was skewed toward people who’d already bought in. Opening the gate with the same build is how you find out what breaks when the crowd shows up. Changing the build at the same time would make the data useless.
So: identical content, much bigger crowd. That’s a stress test, and it’s the one they need.
What’s actually in there
Two things. Horde Siege and 4v4 Versus.
Horde Siege is the one I care about. It’s the rework of Horde, the mode that’s kept me coming back to this series since Gears 2. The “Siege” part earns itself. Waves and objectives now pressure you from several directions at once, instead of funnelling steadily larger groups at one fixed position while you hide behind a fortification you built in wave three.
The beta ships one map and four playable classes. Your level cap is 10. At launch it’ll be 30. There are two invasion bosses available, out of more at release.
Versus gets two modes against four at launch, on two maps against six.
Write those numbers down before you form an opinion, because they matter for what you can fairly judge. A four-class slice of a class-based mode is not the class balance. Level 10 in a system built to 30 is not the progression curve. Every single “the classes feel unfinished” take I’ve read this week is describing a deliberately clipped build, confidently, as if it were the game.
The bit I got wrong last week
I said in a Discord that the beta being one map meant the launch map count would be thin. That was me pattern-matching off other betas and it was just wrong — six Versus maps at launch is a normal number, and the beta is small because betas are small.
I bring it up because I want to be consistent: if I’m going to complain about people over-reading a beta, I have to own doing it myself four days earlier.
Is it worth the download?
If you like Horde, yes, obviously, go.
If you’re a Versus player deciding whether to pre-order — this is the weekend to answer that. Two maps and two modes is thin, but movement, weapon feel and netcode all read honestly in a small sample, and those are the three things that decide whether you’ll still be playing in November. If the gnasher feels wrong to you now, it will feel wrong on six maps too.
If you don’t like Gears, this won’t convert you. It’s very much Gears.
The launch date is the interesting part
October 6, 2026. Xbox Series X|S and PC. No PS5 date announced.
That’s a busy autumn slot and it lands close enough to the end of the year that Coalition clearly wants a run at the awards conversation. It also lands after a summer where Xbox has had a rough news cycle — layoffs at multiple studios, an id Software veteran going public about it this week, a Game Pass price rise still fresh in everyone’s memory. E-Day is carrying more than a normal sequel’s weight.
I don’t think that’s fair to the game. I think it’s true anyway.
Practical stuff
Pre-load if the option appears — it did for weekend one and the download’s not small.
Play Horde with randoms at least once before you decide the class balance is broken. Siege punishes solo positioning much harder than old Horde did, and half of what feels like a tuning problem is four people standing in the wrong places.
And don’t judge the invasion bosses off two of them. There are two here. That’s the point of a beta.
Where I’ll be
Thursday, 12pm PT, which for me is an ugly hour, and I’ll be in Horde Siege until something kicks me out.
If you’re new to Xbox’s subscription and trying to work out which tier gets you what these days, our breakdown of the Game Pass price increase still holds up on the tier structure. And if the PvE loop is what pulls you in here, the Marathon beginner guide covers the other big squad-survival game people are bouncing between right now. For a shorter, tenser co-op fix while you wait for October, Resident Evil Requiem’s beginner tips are worth a look.
Tell me your Horde Siege class in the comments. I’ve been Anchor all week and I’m starting to think I’m playing it wrong.
