Game Pass in August: Play Firewatch This Week or Lose It on the 15th

Everyone reads the “coming to Game Pass” list. Almost nobody reads the other one, and the other one is the one with a deadline attached.
Four things leave on August 15:
- Firewatch (Cloud, Console, PC)
- Atlas Fallen (Cloud, Console, PC)
- Aliens: Fireteam Elite (Cloud, Console, PC)
- Menace (Game Preview, PC)
You have four days.
Play Firewatch. It takes an evening.
If you’ve never played it, this is not a hard call. It’s roughly four hours, it’s a first-person walk through a Wyoming forest with a voice on a radio, and it does something with loneliness and avoidance that basically no other game has managed since. It came out ten years ago and it still gets brought up in every conversation about writing in games.
Four hours. One sitting, if you want. It’s the single highest return on time on the entire service right now and it’s gone on Saturday.
I’ve played it three times. I’m going to play it again this week, which tells you everything.
Aliens: Fireteam Elite is worth a shout too if you’ve got two friends and three spare hours — it’s a competent co-op shooter that got much better after launch and never quite got the credit. Atlas Fallen I bounced off twice. Menace is a Game Preview title on PC, so it’s unfinished by design and I’d only start it if the tactical genre is your whole thing.
One practical note, because people get caught by this every month: the Game Pass app has a Leaving Soon row, and it’s the only reliable place to see what’s about to go. It’s buried and easy to scroll past. It’s also the difference between finishing a game and losing a save you were forty minutes from the end of. Check it on the 1st of the month and again around the 12th. That’s the whole system.
Also worth knowing: a game leaving the service usually goes on sale at a discount for subscribers, so if you’re mid-playthrough on any of these four, buying it outright on Friday is cheaper than buying it on Sunday.
What’s arriving
The month’s already been busy. Heretic + Hexen landed August 4 across Premium, Ultimate and PC. Beast of Reincarnation came the same day on Ultimate and PC — which, if you read our coverage of the review split on that one, is a much cheaper way to find out where you land on it than paying full price.
August 6 brought PowerWash Simulator 2, Monsters are Coming!, and early access to the Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta for Ultimate and PC subscribers.
Today, August 11, is the big day: Grounded 2 (its PS5 launch is happening simultaneously, and no, it’s not 1.0), Date Everything!, and Bounty Star.
Then Ball x Pit on the 12th. On the 13th, three at once — Cricket 26, Mio: Memories in Orbit and Sandustry. Egging On closes the month out on the 18th.
Cricket 26 is the sleeper
I’m calling it now.
Cricket games get ignored in most Western coverage because the audience for them is assumed to be somewhere else. That assumption is lazy and it’s also just wrong about Game Pass, which has an enormous subscriber base in markets where cricket is the sport. Big Ant’s cricket games have quietly been the most mechanically serious sports sims on the market for years — the batting system has more depth in it than most annualised football games manage.
If you’ve never touched one, it’s free with your subscription on the 13th. Try it. Worst case you lose an hour and confirm you don’t like cricket.
The tier confusion is still bad
Something I keep hitting: the games aren’t landing uniformly across tiers.
Beast of Reincarnation went to Ultimate and PC only. Heretic + Hexen went to Premium as well. Date Everything! lists Ultimate, Premium and PC. Cricket 26 is Ultimate, Premium and PC. Sandustry is PC and Ultimate only.
There’s no rule you can hold in your head. You have to check per game, every time, which is a genuinely worse experience than the service had two years ago, and I don’t think that’s an accident so much as the consequence of splitting into this many tiers in the first place.
What I’d actually do this week
Tonight or tomorrow: Firewatch. Non-negotiable.
Thursday: E-Day’s second beta weekend opens to everyone, so that’s Thursday evening gone.
Saturday: Cricket 26, with low expectations and an open mind.
Grounded 2’s pond update I’ll get to when the E-Day beta stops eating my time, which is a sentence that would have made no sense to me in July.
If you’re still trying to work out which tier you’re actually paying for and what it gets you now, our Game Pass price increase breakdown lays out the structure. For the other big sports sim on the service, the MLB The Show 26 Road to the Show guide is a good comparison point for how deep these things go now. And if co-op survival is your lane, the Marathon beginner guide covers the extraction side.
Set a reminder for the 15th. Genuinely. That’s the one people forget.
